Digital Glue on Glass panel

Create image data

Three image data are needed for Digital Glue processing.
1. Color image data
2. Duotone data of the image data. (Inverted black and white)
3. Image data filled with black color. : Image dimensions should be same as the area that will be glued.
Create necessary data after reading How to create Duotone data.

* On this tutorial, photo data is used. Therefore, Photoshop is used for editing the data. If only vector data such as color logo is used, Illustrator is used for data creation or editing. Non or pale color printing areas are filled with black color data.


Print image file is rasterized by "RasterLink"

A raster image processor (RIP) converts the image data to an appropriate data format for digital inkjet printing.

Mimaki RasterLink is software RIP that can rasterize the data without a special hardware.
In addition, RasterLink has a variety of tools for optimizing the data for inkjet printing.

Print the color image on the glass panel

Print an outer line of the panel on the paper for positioning purpose.
Wipe the panel with alcohol and place it an appropriate position, and then print full-color image.

Print the duotone data with a clear ink (Print conditions: 720×600 dpi 8 Pass)

Print a clear ink on the surface that will be adhered.

Print surface is not exactly flat because ink volumes are different by each color. In order to fill gaps between colors, print a clear ink on pale color print or non-printed areas.
* According to ink layer thickness of color printing, change the print conditions.

Apply a clear ink on another glass panel

Apply a clear ink on another panel for flattening the whole surface by the printer.
Before application, wipe the glass clean.

Why a cured clear ink layer is needed ?
If the clear ink is not cured after printing, the surface cannot maintain its flatness.
Smooth and flat primer layer is produced on the cured clear ink layer.

Left: Only uncured primer ink is applied.
Right: Uncured primer ink is applied on a cured clear ink layer.

Apply a primer ink without curing process

Apply a primer ink on whole surfaces of two panels after clear ink printing.

No UV irradiation is required during an application of primer ink.
How to disable UV irradiation.
1. Switch the printer mode to [LOCAL]
2. Press [FUNCTION] key
3. Select [SET UP]
4. Press [ENTER] key
5. Select [UV MODE]
6. Press [ENTER] key
7. Select UV MODE: OFF
8. Press [ENTER] key
9. Press [END] key
Change the color data of printing area to the primer before operating the printer.
Print conditions for uncured primer application
Print conditions: 720×1200dpi 16 Pass
The number of overprints: 2
Color adjustment: - 10 (Color adjust / Density / Whole)

Paste two pantels together

Place the clear panel on the printed panel, and then slide it from end to end while pushing out air bubbles.
Push out air bubbles properly by sliding the panel several times.
Wear gloves to protect your hands from uncured primers.

Cure the primer by UV irradiation

Cure the primer. This is the final process.

How to enable UV irradiation without printing.

1. Switch the printer mode to [LOCAL]
2. Press [FUNCTION] key
3. Select [SET UP]
4. Press [ENTER] key
5. Select [UV MODE]
6. Press [ENTER] key
8. Press [ENTER] key
9. Press [END] key
UV lamp setting is completed.
Apply UV light to the panels for curing and bonding.


Primer delivers beautiful finish without air bubbles.

One more layer can be added.

Adding one more panel layer increases a sense of depth and artistic appearance.


  • Reflected UV light tends to reach the printhead while thick materials are printed. Cured inks on the head cause operational issues. Please fill gaps between materials on the print table by using a jig.
